South Dakota had finally started to warm up...as I write this post it's snowing...again. But last weekend was B-E-A-U-TIFUL! So of course we decided to take the munchkins and our new pup out for a hike. The Black Hills have so many amazing hikes to choose from. For this day we were looking for something decently close to home so Buzzard's Roost was the winner.
I am so glad we chose to stay close to home, I don't think out poor pup could've handled a farther drive. He's a rescue doggy so we aren't sure what his life was like before we got him, I'm guessing his previous car rides were not to pleasant destinations. He was instantly upset and drooling like crazy. Then majorly puked all over the place! Great way to start a hike right!
Luckily, Buzzard's Roost is only about 7 miles outside of Rapid City. I still feel beyond blessed to live so close to such gorgeous surroundings! The trail was a bit icy/muddy in parts but the kids and Scout (the rescue pup) did great. Scout got to interact with lots of doggies on the trail and we met lots of wonderful people. That's another thing I love about hiking and the hiking community, everyone is willing to point you in the right direction or give a smile and a wave...there are no grumpy people on the hiking trail on such a beautiful day!
Buzzard's Roost is a fairly quick hike, with our little ones walking most of the way it took us 2 1/2 hours from start to finish. We didn't spend a ton of time at the top, just enough for a quick snack as it was SUPER windy up there. And of course, gotta love technology...both mine and my husband's phones would not stay on. I could get mine to come on for 10 seconds at a time, so I was only able to take a few pictures but nothing to fully capture the true beauty of that location. I highly recommend this hike if you are in the Black Hills!
